Be nice to know which software it improves.
Still if they keep fixing little things, fair enough..even if it is something I have not yet noticed.

A mysterious firmware update, firmware 2.42, has just gone live.

To be entirely honest, we have absolutely no idea what this firmware does. It's odd; usually Sony prompts everyone before these sort of updates occur, but this time nobody has received any prior notice.

Just go download it we suppose. We'll be updating this article momentarily as more specific details on this new update arise.

Update:

It appears that the Trophies have been optimized and are loading much quicker now.

Update #2

Official word from Sony: "This update improves the playback quality of some PLAYSTATION 3 and PlayStation format software."

Update #3

For those of you having difficulty downloading the new firmware update via the PS3, we have provided a link to download the update to your PC and transfer to your system. Click here to download firmware 2.42.

I can confirm that video playback has improved. Some homemade AVCHD content had problems in my 60GB (would stop playing and say the content was "invalid), but works fine, now.

I appreciate Sony constantly trying to improve the PS3 experience...But Jeeeezzzzz.........could they not just consolidate these updates into.... uhhhh ...I dunno.....maybe a quarterly update?
It seems like every couple of weeks I'm having to update my firmware.

Would you rather wait with issues or have more updates and not have playback issues?

Refuse the update.
personally for the very little time it takes to complete an update I don't care if they are every week. If they benefit the owner, I don't see the problem.

I'm all for updates, but I do think that a detailed changelog would be nice.

I noticed theres a new videos link in the PSStore... I'm not sure if that was there before or not.

What are they fixing wth all these updates? Are there really that many problems? I haven't seen them. Now if only they added the ability to remove or move that clock they forced on me in the last update.

For no particular reason , other than curiosity after seeing people moan in various threads. I thought I would time the update from start to finish. Including downloading, restarting and installing it took 4 minutes 37 seconds on mine. That's it total. I don't usually bother how long it takes as I just set it going whilst I am doing something else. I read on one forum that someone's was still going after an hour blink.gif blink.gif

Mainly depends on your Internet connection and how well the Sony Servers are doing (I read most of them are based in Japan). On my 8MB connection and my PS3 connects wireless I think it can do it in about 5 minutes. Not bad at all really. That other guy was probably downloading the update as soon as it came out, because I think they sign you out of PSN then everybody downloads it at the same time making it slow.

Also I read the US PS Video store has like a similar update cycle to the PS Store so thats probably a separate thing. But I don't know since they don't have it in the UK.
